From Wikipedia: Meetup is a social media platform for hosting and organizing in-person and virtual activities, gatherings, and events for people and communities of similar interests, hobbies, and professions.
Many of our members already use Meetup to learn about and sign up for various kinds of activities. To use meetup for participation in Wanderbirds hikes, you must:
| (1) | Register with Meetup.com / Wanderbirds Hiking Club . If you’re not already a Meetup member, follow the on-screen instructions to sign up for free with Meetup. |
| (2) | Join the Wanderbirds Hiking Club group — Click “Join this group.” If you’re not already a Meetup member, follow the on-screen instructions to sign up for free with Meetup. [this only signs you up for Meetup membership, not Wanderbirds membership, and doesn’t yet sign you up for participation in any particular hike.] You only have to complete these two steps once. After that, opening the above link may request that you login to Meetup and then will take you directly to the Wanderbirds landing page on Meetup. | (3) | Select the hike you want and click “Attend”. Read the hike details, including the LIABILITY and CANCELLATION POLICY paragraphs, then click the red “Attend” button and follow the on-screen instructions. RSVP’s for Wanderbirds hikes generally open on Sunday, one week before the hike. |
Hikes are usually posted to Meetup two to four weeks before the hike date, so if you don’t see the hike you want, wait until then. Please do not contact the hike leaders by email or phone to sign up; only sign-ups made through Meetup will be accepted. When you sign up through Meetup you pay the hike fee online using PayPal, saving both you and the hike leaders the trouble of exchanging funds on hike day.
If this is your first time hiking with us, it is club policy that you will take the Moderate hike. This is in the interest of hiker safety and to avoid unexpected distress for hikers not experienced or fit enough to take the long hike. If you haven’t been accustomed to hiking on rough, mountainous trails in isolated areas, it is a good idea to consult with a hike leader before signing up.
Some Wanderbirds events (such as Spring Picnic Hikes or the Annual Holiday Party) are designated for Club members only. These are exceptions to the above rule. They are not posted on Meetup and invitations to sign up are sent only to registered Wanderbirds Members. You can become a club member by submitting the Membership Application Form and paying member dues (Dues).
